Tonight’s Topic: How to create more space!
Decorate on the Diagonal: One way to add visual interest to a room and make it appear larger is to place your furniture at an angle. This arrangement works best for rectangular dining room tables, beds in square bedrooms, sofas and desks. Placing furniture at an angle works because the longest straight line in any given room is its diagonal. When you place your furniture at an angle, it leads the eye along the longer distance, rather than the shorter wall, making the room seem larger. As an added bonus, you often get some additional storage or display space behind the angled piece.
Lighting is a key element in opening up a space. Let the light into the room. By letting the natural light flow into the room, you will be surprised at how this will open up the room and make it look larger. If you do not have a lot of natural light, you can add some lighting features to the room to make it look bigger. You will be amazed at how this small addition can make a big difference.
If you have access to natural light, make full use of it. Bring it into your home through windows. Full height glass panes work best. Having a large picture window can make a room seem bigger because a barrier between the visitor and outside view has been removed. Instead of seeing a dimension-defining wall, visitors see an expansive view of the outdoors. Make sure window coverings are sheer, or are pulled back, to bring more light in. If the view is bad use hanging plants and potted flowers near windows. Lamps will bring in colour and focus attention. Track lighting is my total favorite. This is an inexpensive way to add a dramatic effect to a focal point. Which brings me to my next tip.
Mirrors can make your room look larger. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors towards it, which will give the illusion of depth. The mirrors also reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter during the day and night. They bounce light deep into the room, making it appear larger. This is especially effective with near a window so the outdoors can be reflected. Mirrors on the walls and glass tabletops will make it seem like there’s a more open flow. You can also use mirrored cabinet doors to make spaces feel large and uncluttered. Making these small adjustments can make any room look bigger!

Make a list and, yes, check it twice
Since we have a week before Thanksgiving, gather up the recipes you’ll use for the big day and read them carefully. Make a shopping list of all the items you’ll need to make your feast. Be sure to determine if you have all the pots, pans and utensils you’ll need, too. If you don’t, you might consider borrowing items.
Add a head count to your list, too. Sure, Cousin Chloe might instead opt to go to her boyfriend’s house for dinner at the last minute, but at least you’ll have a general idea of how much you’ll need to make for your dinner. Lists will be a big help to keep you organized.
Go back to your recipes and check them yet again. This time, figure out cooking times for each of your dishes so you know what to put in the oven (or fridge or salad bowl) and when and how much time you’ll need to cook or prepare each dish. Be sure to look for things that you can make ahead of time, like cranberry sauce. When making pies, make the dough a few days before and store in the frezzer until you are ready to use them.
If you’re having guests, chances are they’ll offer to bring something. Take them up on it! Even though your family loves your mashed potatoes the best, your guests can still contribute without taking on the beloved taters!
Ask your guests to bring things you still need, like the beverages, ice or an appetizer. That will help free up your valuable time and still allow your guests to contribute.
Appetizers are a great distraction to keep your family and guests sidetracked (and satisfied) from asking, "Is it ready yet?"
A warm and pretty setting can be the crowning glory to your big meal. Make a plan to ensure you have at least a few easy ideas to help make your home and table inviting. This can range from something easy, like gathering a few pumpkins and gourds together in different spots, to creating a pretty centerpiece.

]]>Every room has a focal point and when decorating for the holidays if you use these focal points you can go lower key on other decorations. When you enter a room or home, your eye should be drawn to that focal point. Let's say for instance you have a fireplace in a room that is your focal point. By adding a Christmas tree next to it or near it then decorating up the fireplace and mantle you don't need to add too many other things in the room to make it feel Christmassy. Same with a dining room, the dining room table is your focal point, use a beautiful table cloth and an elaborate centerpiece for your decorations and you don't have to do too many other things to make the room work for any type of gathering.
2. Accessorize.
Buying pillows and candles can really make a room feel comfortable and cozy while pulling the holiday colors around the room. Adding flower arrangements, evergreen sprigs and using inexpensive holiday bulbs in lots of nooks and crannies add splashes of color and a festive feeling.
3. Store for use again next year.
Probably one of the best uses of time and money is buying things that can be stored and used again. Using plastic containers to store all your decorative items makes sure that they will not be damaged over time. Many online stores as well as large retailers have color coordinated bins to use for each holiday season. Having color coordinated containers for each holiday theme will make it easier for organization. If packaged properly these decorations can be used for years depending on their durability and style.
Everyone loves a nice warm home because it reflects the personality of the homeowner. Going home at the end of long working day is worth looking forward to-its your little piece of heaven on earth.
